Tartans Start Year with Relays Against University of Pittsburgh

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team began the season Friday, September 27 with a relay meet at the University of Pittsburgh.

The 400-yard medley relay of junior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), junior Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny), freshman Aleksander Tarczynski, and senior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) finished second in 3:35.10.

The 500-yard freestyle crescendo relay with the first leg a 50-yard distance, the second a 100-yard distance, the third a 150-yard distance, and the final leg a 200-yard freestyle, saw the Tartans finish third in a final time of 4:10.22. Freshman Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East) led off the relay, with  freshman Yousef Hassen (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands) swimming second, Gonzalez third, and freshman John McNab fourth.

The Tartans took first in the 300-yard backstroke relay with Britton swimming the first 100 yards in 51.19 seconds. Sophomore Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton) swam second and freshman Oliver Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) had the final 100 yards to touch in 2:38.72, a whole two seconds before Pitt's top finish.

The 300-yard breaststroke relay was swam by freshman Mason Loyet (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo), freshman Seaver Dahlgren (Mill Valley, Calif. / Branson), and sophomore Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield). The trio finished second in 2:57.07.

The top 300-yard butterfly relay for the Tartans was by freshman Alex Chiu (Sewell, N.J. / Washington Township), Tarczynski, and Hawke with a final time of 2:34.78.

The last relay of the meet was the 200-yard medley with Britton, Daniel, Gonzalez, and Nagler finishing in 1:35.28.

The Tartans will host an intersquad meet next on Saturday, October 12 before traveling to Gambier, Ohio, for the Kenyon Relays on Saturday, October 19.
