Three School Records Set on Opening Night of UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team is in fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships after the first day of competition at the meet hosted by the University of Chicago.

Sophomore James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) earned an All-UAA finish on the 3-meter diving board with a third-place showing with 548.35 points after recording a career-best score and school record of 565.65 in the preliminaries.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of junior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), freshman Erik Feldmann (Yakima, Wash. / West Valley), freshman Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East) and senior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) finished third for an All-UAA honor in a time of 1:21.31 to qualify for the NCAA Championships while setting a new school record. The relay touched in 1:22.05 in the preliminaries for a season-best time and NCAA B qualifier.

Freshman John McNab (Westport, Conn. / Staples) bettered his NCAA B cut time in the 500-yard freestyle by touching in 4:27.82 in the preliminaries. He finished fifth in the championship final in a better time of 4:27.17. Sophomore Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) also reached the championship final with a season-best time of 4:32.77 and was even better in the final finishing sixth in 4:32.31 for a NCAA B cut time.

Freshman Aleksander Tarczynski (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) finished eighth in the championship final of the 200-yard IM in 1:52.33 after reaching the heat with a season-best time of 1:51.84 in the preliminaries. Hawke and sophomore Daniel Ng (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) both swam in the B final of the 200-yard IM and finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in times of 1:52.67 and 1:54.41. Junior Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) won the C final in 1:51.99 to pace three Tartans in the heat.

Britton matched his school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.67 in the preliminaries and then beat it in the finals as he placed fifth in 20.63. Nagler was sixth in the B final to place 14th overall in 21.12 while freshman Alex Chiu (Sewell, N.J. / Washington Township) was 21st overall in 21.29 and sophomore Jonathan Hua (New Providence, N.J. / Delbarton) 23rd in 21.32.

The 400-yard medley relay of Britton, freshman Seaver Dahlgren (Mill Valley, Calif. / Branson), Chiu and freshman Yousef Hassen (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands) closed the first session with a season-best time of 3:19.36 in the 400-yard medley to place fifth and provisionally qualify for the NCAA meet.

Competition resumes Friday with the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 800-yard freestyle relay.
