Cut Times, Second-Place Finishes and a School Record Highlight Day 2 of UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday, February 14. The Tartans are currently in fourh place heading into the final day of events on Saturday, February 15.

The 200-yard medley relay of junior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason), sophomore Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), senior Sam Hawke (Malvern, Pa. / Episcopal Academy) and freshman Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East) picked up a fifth-place finish in an NCAA B Cut time of 1:30.66.

Sophomore Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) earned an NCAA B Cut time in the 400-yard IM when he finished seventh in a season-best time of 3:59.40. Three Tartans swam in the B final of the 400-yard IM with senior Rip Lyster (Naples, Fla. / Gulf Coast) finishing third in the heat in a time of 4:03.99. Junior Emmanuel Eppinger (Pittsburgh, PA / Winchester Thurston) finished fourth in the heat in a career-best 4:04.89 and senior Connor Clayton (Simpsonville, S.C. / Mauldin) was sixth in the heat in 4:05.71.

Hawke was the top finisher for the Tartans in the 100-yard butterfly when he finished seventh in a career-best time of 49.46. Sophomore Sean Ream (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) picked up points for the Tartans by finishing 11th overall in a career-best time of 49.77.

Freshman John McNab (Westport, Conn. / Staples) earned All-UAA status with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle by touching in a season-best time of 1:38.62 which also provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships. Junior Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny) was sixth in the championship heat of the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.61.

Daniel was impressive in the 100-yard breaststroke as he finished fourth overall in 56.18 while freshman Seaver Dahlgren (Mill Valley, Calif. / Branson) was 13th overall in 57.24.

Britton also earned All-UAA recognition with his second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. He finished the finals in 49.04 after a season-best time of 48.76 in the preliminaries.

The 800-yard freestyle relay closed the meet with a school-record and NCAA qualifying performance. Dauksher, McNab, Gonzalez and Hawke surpassed the record by more than four seconds, finishing third overall in 6:39.37.

Competition concludes Saturday with 1-meter diving, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay.
