Tartans Set Records at Intersquad Meet in First Competition of 2020-21
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted an intersquad meet for its first competition of the 2020-21 season, setting a school record and six pool records.
Junior Sean Ream (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) set both the pool record and the school record in the 200-yard butterfly when he finished the race in 1:47.28 on Saturday. The previous school record was held by Mitchell Riek who set the mark in 2016. On Sunday, Ream set the pool record in the 100-yard butterfly in 48.51 to surpass the previous mark set in 1998.
The 200-yard medley relay A team of junior Oliver Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick), junior Jasper Lessiohadi (Lawrenceville, N.J. / George School), senior Max Gonzalez (Allison Park, Pa. / North Allegheny), and sophomore Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East) finished in 1:32.51 while the 400-yard medley relay A team of Lance, junior Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), freshman Chris Stange (St. James, N.Y. / St. Anthony's), and sophomore Erik Feldmann (Yakima, Wash. / West Valley) set a pool record with a time of 3:21.63. The previous pool record has stood since 1998.
The 200-yard freestyle relay of Feldmann, Gonzalez, sophomore Alex Chiu (Sewell, N.J. / Washington Township), and Nagler led off Sunday with a time of 1:22.63.
Daniel touched first in a tightly contested 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.16.
Gonzalez won the 100-yard backstroke in 50.93 and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.39 on Saturday. Lance was first to touch in the 100-yard backstroke on Sunday in 51.30 while Feldmann won the 100-yard freestyle on Sunday in 45.96.
Junior Mason Loyet (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) earned a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.87 and also touched first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.98. Sophomore William Staebel (The Woodlands, Texas / The John Cooper School) was first in the 100-yard breaststroke on Sunday in 58.63 with Loyet finishing even better on Sunday in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.41.
Feldmann swam the 50-yard freestyle in 20.98 to win on Saturday while Gonzalez touched in 20.90 on Sunday to take the meet title.
Senior John Tjards (Naperville, Ill. / Metea Valley) swam solo in the 200-yard backstroke to finish in 1:57.66 on Saturday while junior Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) touched in 1:51.53 on Sunday.
Sophomore John McNab (Westport, Conn. / Staples) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.67 on Saturday with junior Doug Johnson (Brea, Calif. / Brea Olinda) winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:52.00 on Sunday.
Stange touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.62, just .25 seconds ahead of Daniel on Saturday and finished the 200-yard butterfly on top on Sunday in 1:54.19.
On Saturday, Dauksher finished the 400-yard IM in 4:00.88 to set a new pool record and overtake the previous one set in 2015. On Sunday, Dauksher set the pool record in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.66 before McNab led off the 800-yard freestyle relay with a 200-yard split time of 1:39.76 to take the record.
The 200-yard IM was won by Daniel in 1:53.43 before the 800-yard freestyle relay team of McNab, Dauksher, Gonzalez, and junior Daniel Ng (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) set a new pool record with a time of 6:43.12 to finish the meet.
In diving, sophomore Matthew Wagner (Mason, Ohio / Wiliam Mason) registered a score of 502.20 on the 3-meter board after 11 dives on Saturday while junior James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) tallied 497.25 points on the 1-meter board on Sunday.
