Tartans Start UAA Championships with Qualifying Marks and School Records

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - Through six events at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships, the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team sits fifth with 335.5 points. The Tartans set two school records for the night while a relay and a diver earned All-UAA recognition for their finishes.

The 200-yard freestyle relay started the evening with a second-place finish in an NCAA qualfying time of 1:21:30 which was two hundredths of a second off the first-place time by Emory. Swimming the event in a school record time was junior Erik Feldmann (Yakima, Wash. / West Valley), junior Yousef Hassen (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands), junior Matthew Nagler (West Chicago, Ill. / St. Charles East), and senior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason).

Junior Aleksander Tarczynski (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) touched eighth overall in the 200-yard IM in 1:51.00 to better the NCAA qualifying time and set a personal best time in the process.

Feldmann swam the 50-yard freestyle final in 21.07 to place eighth for the Tartans while Britton won the B-Final in a school-record and NCAA qualifying time of 20.43.

The 400-yard medley relay of Britton, senior Colin Daniel (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), senior Sean Ream (Canton, Ohio / Jackson), and Feldmann placed fourth in 3:19.06 to finish the swimming events for the evening.

In diving, senior Jud Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) earned second place for All-UAA honors with 504.55 points on the 3-meter board. His brother James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) placed sixth with 438.95 points while junior Matthew Wagner (Mason, Ohio / Wiliam Mason) was seventh in 438.35 points.

The meet resumes on Friday morning with preliminaries in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke. The 800-yard freestyle relay will be added to the evening session.
