Tarcyznski Claims All-America Honor on Third Night of NCAA Championships

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued action on the third day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, March 17. Senior Aleksander Tarczynski swam to an All-America finish while the 800-yard freestyle relay earned points for the Tartans who now have 100 points and are in 10th place with one day left to go.

Tarczynski entered the championships with the sixth-best time in the 200-yard butterfly and finished the championship final in that exact place with a time of 1:47.89 after qualifying for the final heat with a time of 1:47.46. The race was the third individual event for the senior and his 10th time in the pool after swimming with three relays for preliminaries and finals.

The 800-yard freestyle relay wasn't expected to finish in the top 16 with their seed time ranked 18th but senior Erik Feldmann, freshman Arnav Deshpande, Tarczynski, and senior Matthew Nagler swam their way to All-America Honorable Mention status with a 15th-place finish in a time of 6:43.26.

Notes

  • Tarczynski is the first Tartan to earn All-America honors in the 200-yard butterfly since Mitchell Riek earned the honor in 2017.
  • The 800-yard freestyle relay quartet is the first to earn a top 16 finish in the event for the Tartans since 2019.
