Tartans Place Fourth at UAA Championships After Record Setting Performances

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team finished the four-day University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at the University of Chicago on Saturday, February 17 in fourth place with 1,202 points.

Top Performances

  • Junior Jonathan Lindstrom earned third-team All-UAA with a third-place finish on the 1-meter diving board by collecting 448.00 points in the finals.
  • Senior Tyler Hoyt scored 432.45 points on the 1-meter board and finished sixth.
  • Freshman Miles Haraldsson swam the 1,650-yard freestyle to a final time of 15:55.39 to place 12th overall while senior Santiago Gomez was 17th in 16:12.27 and freshman Cole Venters in 18th place in 16:14.90.
  • Freshman Brayden Morford earned his second individual All-UAA honor of the meet when he placed third in the 200-yard backstroke in a school-record time of 1:45.64.
  • Sophomore Arnav Deshpande won the B-final of the 100-yard freestyle to place ninth overall in a season-best time of 44.97 which also hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
  • Freshman Andy Lu and junior Christian Lanuza swam in the championship final of the 200-yard breaststroke with Lu placing sixth in 2:01.47 and Lanuza eighth in 2:03.12. Lu's time is a career-best and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
  • Graduate student Aleksander Tarczynski swam the 200-yard butterfly to a fifth-place finish in 1:47.71.
  • The Tartans placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay to complete the meet with another school-record time. Morford, Tarczynski, sophomore DJ Lloyd, and Deshpande finished in a time of 2:58.20.

Notes

  • Morford's third school record at the meet topped Justin Britton's 2022 time of 1:46.52 in the 200-yard backstroke.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay topped the school record of 2:58.51 set at the NCAA meet in 2022.
  • Head coach Matt Kinney and assistant coach Arli Tilves were named UAA Men's Swimming Coaching Staff of the Year. It marks Kinney's fourth honor from the UAA.
