Singles Play Pushes #18 Tartans Over #26 Washington & Lee

(LEXINGTON, Va.) - The #18 Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team traveled south to Lexington, Va., for a match against #26 Washington & Lee University, winning 5-4, for its second straight victory over a ranked opponent. The Tartans are now 9-3 on the year while the Generals drop to 12-4.

The No. 3 doubles pair of sophomore Thomas Cooper (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) and senior Jooho Yu (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) won 8-4 as the team trailed 2-1 heading into singles play.

Freshman Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School), senior Duke Miller (Poway, Calif./Poway), freshman Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and senior Harsha Rao (Severn, Md./Old Mill) won their respective singles matches to help the Tartans earn the come-from-behind victory.

Alla won his first set after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2), before not allowing a point in the second set, winning 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Miller also played in a tiebreaker, winning 6-3, 7-6 (0) at No. 3 singles.

Kumar won his first set at No. 4 singles 6-3 before taking the second set, 6-0 while Rao won both sets by 6-2 scores at No. 6 singles.

The Tartans will next face #8 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
