Tartans Open Dual Season at Nancy J. Heath Gator Invite

(MEADVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its dual season with a pair of matches at the Nancy J. Heath Gator Invite hosted by Allegheny College. The Tartans started with a 9-0 win over Division II Edinboro University before defeating Allegheny 9-0.

Against Edinboro, juniors Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while Heaney-Secord later won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles against Bruno Borda. Sophomore Paul Okuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou) won his No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-0 while freshman took over the remainder of the singles line-up for the Tartans.

Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King), Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield), Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), and Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) each won their first career match for a scored event in the opener against Edinboro.

The Tartans swept play again versus Allegheny, winning 8-5, 8-6, and 8-3 in doubles action. Heaney-Secord and Duncan won at No. 1 doubles while junior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and Zheng won at No. 2 doubles and Okuda and Kasbeer won at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Heaney-Secord won a three-set match in the No. 1 slot, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 as Kirkov won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Duncan picked up a win at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4 with Kasbeer winning in straight sets at No. 4 singles. Zheng won again at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1 with Wadwani earning another victory at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
