Tartans Drop Tough Match to Division I Duquesne

(HARMAR, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked ninth nationally, opened its spring season with a match against Division I Duquesne University on Saturday, February 7 at Alpha Tennis in Harmar, Pennsylvania. The Tartans dropped the contest 5-2 and are now 3-2 on the year while the Dukes improved to 4-0.

The Dukes took the all important doubles point in Division I scoring by sweeping the matches but not without a fight from the Tartans. The No. 2 pair of senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) battled to an 8-6 loss while the No. 3 pair of sophomore Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield) and freshman Matt Seifert (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) fell 8-5.

In singles, the Tartans earned victories at the fourth and fifth spots. Sophomore Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) won at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1 before sophomore Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won at No. 4 singles 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(10-3).

The Tartans will next face Division I St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Greensburg Racket Club as their final tune up for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship which begins Friday, February 20.
