No. 11 Men's Tennis Blank Sewanee to End West Coast Trip

(MALIBU, Calif.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 11th nationally, defeated Sewanee, 9-0, on Friday, March 13 to close out its spring break tour in California. The Tartans are now 8-6 on the year.

Carnegie took a 3-0 lead following doubles play.  The Tartans No.1 doubles team of seniors Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass.) won 8-2 after the No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield)  and freshman Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind.) won 8-1.  The Tartans closed out the sweep when senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) won 8-3 at No. 2.

The Tartans then continued the momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets.  At No. 1, Junior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) won, 6-1, 6-2 followed by Heaney-Secord at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.  Sophomore Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) played No. 3 singles and was victorious be the scores of 6-2, 6-0, while Duncan won 7-6 (2), 6-1 in tne fourth spot.

No. 5 and No. 6 singles was won by sophomore Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) and freshman Edward Ang (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0, respectively.  

The Tartans will face Washington and Lee on Saturday, March 28 in Fredericksburg, Va., at 9:00 a.m.
