Tartans Top Division II Foe Walsh
(MONROEVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played host to Division II Walsh University on Saturday, February 6. The Tartans topped the Cavaliers 6-3 to improve to 3-1 overall while Walsh moves to 1-2.
The Tartans started the match with a sweep in doubles play. The tandem of senior Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) and junior Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) cruised to an 8-1 win at third doubles. The Tartans went ahead 2-0 following an 8-3 win by senior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and freshman Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) at No. 1 doubles. The third and final point earned by the Tartans came when the duo of sophomore Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and junior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won 9-8 (6) at No. 2.
Carnegie Mellon grabbed its fourth point following a straight set victory by freshman Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose). Arora won by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. After dropping matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, freshman Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif.) clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Sophomore Tommy Cheng (Cupertino, Calif.) picked up a straight set victory at No. 6 to round out the scoring for the Tartans, as we won 6-3, 6-2.
The Tartans will be back in action on Saturday, February 13 when they host Division I St. Francis (Pa.) University at 3:00 p.m.
