Tartans Sweep Through Two Matches at Home

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted Oberlin College and Christopher Newport University on Sunday, October 9 in regional tennis action. The Tartans first defeated Christopher Newport, 9-0, before topping Oberlin in a night cap, 9-0.

Against Christopher Newport, the number three doubles team of freshmen Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Mark Prettyman (Fairfax, Va./Thomas Jefferson) gave the Tartans a 1-0 lead with an 8-2 victory. The Tartans then won 8-4 and 8-6 at second and first doubles to lead 3-0.

Senior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won the first point in singles play with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at third singles before freshman Michael Rozenvasser (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) earned match point at first singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

The Tartans swept through doubles play against Oberlin with scores of 8-3, 8-2, and 8-4 at each respective position.

In singles play, sophomore Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) won at the first position, 6-3, 6-2, while Rozenvasser won 6-2, 6-1 at the second position. Also picking up victories were sophomore Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose), freshman Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne), Calzolano and Zheng.

The matches conclude the fall season for the Tartans as a team but Rozenvasser will continue play as he competes at the ITA Oracle Cup on October 13-15 in Surprise, Arizona.
