#7 Men’s Tennis Takes Fourth at ITA Team Indoor Championship

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played in the third place match of the 2017 ITA National Men's Indoor Team Championship on Sunday, February 26 and dropped a hard fought 5-4 decision to fourth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. Carnegie Mellon moves to 6-6, as the Bear are now 3-2.

Carnegie Mellon fell behind 3-0 after doubles play, but didn't go down without a fight. The Tartans top doubles team of sophomores Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) and Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) along with the third double tandem of freshman Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) each loss by the score of 9-7.

Levine and freshman Michael Rozenvasser (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) won straight sets at first and second singles to make the score 3-2. Levine defeated Johnny Wu, 6-1, 6-2 before Rozenvasser took down Jason Haugen 6-1, 6-3.

The Tartans then took third and fourth singles to go on top 4-3. Senior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won 6-3, 6-3 over John Carswell in the third spot while Downing won 6-7, 7-6 (1) over Radha Vishnubhotla at four singles.

The Bears won a three-set match at fifth singles to knot the score at 4-4. With the match coming down to sixth singles, Washington's Robin Engel won a straight set match to seal the win for the Bears.

Carnegie Mellon will be back on the courts during spring break week when they travel to California. Carnegie Mellon will start the week against Wabash College on Friday, March 10.
