Strong Singles Play Gives #7 Tartans Win Against #16 Mary Washington

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted 16th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday, April 8 and earned a 5-4 victory after strong singles play. The Tartans moved to 14-7 on the year while the Eagles dropped to 14-6.

The Eagles led 3-0 after doubles, winning all three matches by 8-6 scores.

The Tartans then won singles matches one through five to secure the match victory.

Sophomore Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) earned the first point for the Tartans with a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles. Sophomore Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) then won 6-3, 6-0 at third singles before freshman Michael Rozenvasser (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) won 6-4, 6-1 at second singles.

With the match tied, senior Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) gave the Tartans their first lead with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at fifth singles. Sophomore Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) earned two tiebreaker victories to win the fifth and final point for the Tartans when he topped Joseph Brown, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-1), at fourth singles.

Senior Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) sent his sixth singles match to a third set but fell 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to Ryland Byrd.

The Tartans will next face 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, April 9 at 9:00 a.m.
