Tartans Host Duquesne for Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted Duquesne University in its home invitational on Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24.

Senior Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) won twice in singles play and twice in doubles action. His singles victories came by a 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 score against Tyler Smith and a 6-2, 6-1 score against Joey Matthews. In doubles, Chen paired with freshman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) to win 8-3 on Friday and played with senior Julian Sweeney (Austin, Texas / Westlake) to win 6-4 on Saturday.

Junior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) was 5-1 for the weekend with three wins coming in doubles with junior teammate Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School). The pair won 8-3 on Friday against Tim Kane and Jared Isaacs and then won twice by 6-1 scores against Adam Blasinsky and Dane Bendel and Andrew Ong and Drew Akins on Saturday. Downing's singles victories came on Saturday by 6-1, 6-0 and 8-1 scores.

Freshman Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) also won twice in singles play with wins against Andrew Ong, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, and Smith, 6-2, 6-3.

The Tartans travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Saturday, September 30 to begin play at the ITA Regional Tournament at the University of Mary Washington.
