All-Tartan ITA Southeast Singles Final Pushed to Tuesday

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team had two singles players and one doubles team advance to the finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional on Monday, October 2 after semifinal action at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The all-Tartan singles final has been moved to Tuesday, October 3 and will be played at Carnegie Mellon at 5 p.m.

Junior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and frehman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) will face off in the singles final after winning their respective semifinal matches on Monday. Levine defeated fifth seed David Reed of Christopher Newport University, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, while Boppana topped third-seeded Mark Fallati of Swarthmore College, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Levine paired with fellow junior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) to defeat teammates Tommy Cheng (Cupertino, Calif. / Cupertino) and Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga), 9-7. Cheng, a senior, and Shekar, a freshman, moved through the bracket as an unseeded team and opened the semifinal match 2-0 before Levine and Downing won three straight points to take a 3-2 lead. From there it was tied at 5-all before Levine and Downing took back the lead and held it until the end.

The doubles final was played after the singles semifinal matches and Levine and Downing faced a rested pair from Mary Washington in junior Derek Hagino and junior Patrick Hughes. Mary Washington won the first set 6-4 before winning four straight points in the second set to close the match with a 6-3 win.
