Tartans Top Two Regional Opponents at Home Sunday

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted two regional opponents on Sunday, October 8 at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and finished the day with two victories to move its record to 3-0 for the season. The Tartans started the day with a 6-1 victory against Oberlin College before topping Christopher Newport University, 5-4.

Junior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) earned his 100th career victory when he and junior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) started the day with an 8-4 win at number one doubles against Oberlin. Levine became the 11th player in Tartan men's tennis history to reach 100 combined wins and the second fastest to do so in his 144th overall match. The fastest to 100 for the Tartans was 2010 graduate Jon Spero (138 matches).

Levine finished the day with four wins, as he won his number one singles match, 6-0, 6-1, against Oberlin and 6-4, 6-2 against David Reed of Christopher Newport.

Downing and Levine paired at first doubles to get the first point against Christopher Newport before Downing earned match point against the Captains with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 win at second singles.

Freshman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) also won in singles play against Christopher Newport, 6-3, 6-3 in the third position. Also winning against the Captains was the number two doubles pair of senior Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and sophomore Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) who had an 8-5 victory.

The Tartans will break from action as a team until the spring semester while Levine will vie for a national singles title at the ITA Oracle Cup in Rome, Georgia, from Thursday, October 12 through Saturday, October 14.
