#10 Tartans Place Seventh at ITA National Team Indoor Championship

(MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team faced 13th-ranked Trinity University on Sunday in the seventh-place match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, winning 5-2 after playing to decision. The Tartans are now 6-3 on the year after the match played at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Tartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at first and third doubles. The senior pair of Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Tommy Cheng (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) led off the scoring with a 8-3 win at the third position. Junior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) and freshman Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) then won 8-3 at first doubles for the 2-0 advantage.

Trinity cut the deficit in half with an 8-4 win at second doubles before Levine made the score 3-1 with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at first singles. The Taratns then led 4-1 after freshman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass./Acton Boxborough Regional) picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at third singles. Fourth and second singles finished at the same time with Shekar earning match point for the Tartans with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the fourth position.

The Tartans will break from action until the week of spring break when they'll face Whittier on March 9 in California.
