#12 Tartans Take Down Whittier in Spring Break Opener

(WHITTIER, Calif.) - The 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team began its spring break tour in California with a 9-0 win against Whittier College on Friday, March 9. The Tartans are now 7-3 while the Poets fall to 1-3.

The number one doubles pair of juniors Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) won 8-2 to start the scoring in the Tartans' favor. Freshman Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) and senior Tommy Cheng (Cupertino, Calif. / Cupertino) then won by the same score at second doubles before sophomore Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) paired with freshman Ben Ash (Johns Creek, Ga. / Johns Creek) at third doubles to win 8-3.

While singles played on three courts, Levine was the first to finish when he won 6-0, 6-2 at the first position. Freshman Ray Boppana ( Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional ) clinched the match for the Tartans with a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles.

The Tartans will next play seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis at the University of Redlands on Sunday, March 11 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
