Young #9 Tartans Place Fourth at UAA Championship

(ALTAMONTE Springs, Fla.) - The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team took fourth place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday, April 28, falling 6-3 to 10th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. The Tartans are now 14-7 for the season.

WashU was able to sweep doubles play after the number two pair of Radha Vishnubhotla and Bernardo Neves topped senior Jeffrey Chen (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and freshman Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional), 9-8 (8-6), for the third point.

Singles played out evenly with the Tartans winning at first, third, and fourth singles.

Junior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School), ranked second in the nation, won his third match of the tournament and is now 24-6 in singles competition this season. He topped Johnny Wu, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Boppana, ranked 20th in the nation, won his third singles match against Benjamin vander Sman, 6-1, 6-0, while fellow freshman Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) won 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles against Jason Haugen.
