Men's Tennis Opens Year at Kenyon Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - A rain-shortened invitational at Kenyon College opened the year for the Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team. Play on Saturday was forced inside with only doubles being completed. Sunday's action wasn't recorded as official results.

Junior Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional ) won their first match 8-1, against a pair from Earlham College, before falling to Anthony Kanam and Jonathan Powell of Case Western Reserve University, 8-5.

Sophomore Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) and freshman Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley ) also won their first match before falling in the second. The win came by an 8-5 score against Denison's Brian Weisberg and Vlad Rotnov.

Another win for the Tartans came from the freshmen pair of Clark Safron (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) and Kunal Barde (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty). They won 8-1 against Earlham's Coby Maisel and Brandon Girodanelli before falling 8-1 to Siddharth Rajupet and Earl Hsieh of Case Western Reserve.

Despite falling in their first match, 8-7, junior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) and freshman Yannick Bloem (Geneva, Switzerland / EPFL, Lausanne) won the consolation side of the bracket with a pair of 8-5 wins.

The Tartans will next compete in the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday, September 15.
