Downing Opens Play at ITA Oracle Cup

(ROME, Ga.) - Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis senior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) competed in the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Oracle Cup on Thursday. The championship event is being held at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

The senior, who is seeded third, drew Alan Dubrovsky of Hobart College in his opening match and fell by the scores of 7-5 and 6-3. Downing will now play Joshua Bode of Concordia University (Texas) on Friday at 9:00 a.m. in the consolation semifinal.

In doubles play, the tandem of Yangeng Jiang and Justin Wang of Bowdoin University won by default over Downing and senior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School). Downing and Levine will now play Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson of Hobart in the consolation semifinal of doubles play on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
