#15 Tartans Drop Close Battle to #8 WashU

(ORLANDO, Fla.) - The 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team faced another University Athletic Association (UAA) foe on its spring trip on Monday. This time the Tartans ran into the eighth-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis and dropped a 6-3 match. Carnegie Mellon moves to 5-4 on the season and WashU moves to 7-3.

Carnegie Mellon picked up a point in doubles when the duo of junior Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) won 8-5 in the second spot.

In singles play, WashU won at furst singles to take a 3-1 advantage before freshman Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) grabbed a point for the Tartans winning 6-2, 6-4 at fifth singles, making the score 3-2. The next four matches went to a third set and were played as superbreakers with the Bears winning three of them to seal the win.

Junior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) ended the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9) win at third singles, claiming the Tartans lone superbreaker win.

Carnegie Mellon will now play seventh-ranked Amherst College on Tuesday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m.
