Strong Singles Play Lifts #15 Tartans to a 5-4 Win Over #16 Mary Washington

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 15th nationally hosted the 16th-ranked Eagles of University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. The Tartans came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Eagles 5-4. The Tartans are now 7-6 while the Eagles move to 15-4.

After falling behind 3-0 following doubles play, Carnegie Mellon took points at first, second, fourth and sixth singles to make the score 4-3.

Senior Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) started the scoring for the Cardinal and Gray with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the top spot, then sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) won 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles followed by senior Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) winning 6-0 7-6 (6) in the second spot. Freshman Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) won 6-3, 6-2 at six singles to give the Tartans the 4-3 advantage.

Freshman Clark Safran (Stanford, Calif. / Menlo School) then sealed the win with a 7-6 (7), 6-3 win at fifth singles.

The Tartans will host John Carroll University on Sunday, April 14 at 10:00 am.
