14 Carnegie Mellon Athletes Named to the 12th Annual UAA Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Carnegie Mellon University had 14 student-athletes named to the 12th Annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents Council Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced be the league’s office on Wednesday. The 14 Tartans, three men’s cross country, two football, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, men’s tennis and one women’s tennis, received the prestigious honor along with 142 other student-athletes representing all eight UAA member institutions.

The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team was honored for the 11th straight season and 18th time in the last 19 years by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an ITA All-Academic Team. In addition, seven players were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

Three Carnegie Mellon University athletes were honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as At-Large Academic All-District selections. Senior women's swimmer Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) was selected to the women's team while junior swimmer Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior men’s tennis athlete Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) were selected to the men's team. The award is the second received by both Nicklas-Morris and Britton.

The Carnegie Mellon University men’s and women's tennis programs received regional honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The women’s team earned the ITA Community Service Award for the Atlantic South while the men’s program received recognition with the ITA Community Service Honorable Mention Award. Additionally, senior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year for the Atlantic South.

Three Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis players were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) coaches on Tuesday with recognition on the 2020 UAA Men's Tennis All-Association Team. Sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) received accolades for his play at both third singles and third doubles while junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) was honored at first singles and freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) joined the two on the squad as Gibson’s partner at third doubles.
