Tartans Open Play at Kenyon Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its 2019-20 season on Saturday and Sunday at the annual Kenyon College Invitational. The Tartans faced opponents from Denison University and Kenyon College.

Sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) opened play with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Pascal Lee of Kenyon in flight A. Gibson then lost his next two matches and placed fourth in the flight. Freshman Leo Wang (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino High School) started his collegiate career with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Henry Wessel in flight BV. The freshman then followed Gibson and placed fourth for the flight.

In flight C, freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) and junior Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) placed first and third, respectively. Nottingham defeated Luis Arturo Platas of Kenyon 7-6, 6-2 and Hayden McNamara of Denison 6-2, 6-1. He then won the flight on a default victory and the faced Jacob Smith of Kenyon in another match-up and dropped a three-set match. Pinckney won his opening match Smith 6-3, 6-4 before dropping his second match to land in the third-place match on Sunday. The junior faced Arturo Platas and won 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, the tandem of Wang and Nottingham took second in flight C. The duo won 8-7 over the pair of Smith and Aidan Biglow from Kenyon and then lost 8-4 in the championship match of the flight.

The Tartans will next compete in the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 21-21.
