#15 Men's Tennis Opens Season with Win Over Grove City

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team started the 2021 spring season with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Wolverines of Grove City College Friday afternoon.

The Tartans swept doubles play with the freshmen tandem of Michael Fourchy (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis North) and Arjan Bedi (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) winning their first collegiate match with an 8-0 victory in the third spot. The Tartans second doubles team of senior Joshua Pinckney (Atlanta, Ga. / The Westminster Schools) and freshman Jaden D'Abreo (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) then made the score 2-0 with an 8-2 win before senior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) and sophomore Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) closed doubles with an 8-4 win.

After Grove City made the score 3-1, Boppana won a straight set match, 6-4, 6-4, at first singles to push the score to 4-1. Boppana's doubles partner, Nottingham, then sealed the Cardinal and Gray's first win of the season with a 7-5, 7-6(5), victory at second singles.

D'Abreo, Fourchy and Bedi each claimed first career collegiate singles victories with straight set wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively. D'Abreo won 6-3, 6-0, Fourchy 6-0, 6-0, while Bedi closed the scoring with a 6-1, 6-3 decision.

The Tartans will be back on the courts Saturday, March 12, when they entertain Franciscan University.
