Tartans Win Second Straight Against DI Opponent

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team won its second straight match against a Division I opponent when the Tartans topped Duquesne University 5-2 on Saturday, February 5 at Lakevue Athletic Club. The Tartans are now 2-0 on the season.

For the second straight match, the Tartans won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Nicholas Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Academy) and freshman William Wang (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) partnered for an 8-5 win at second doubles ahead of juniors Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) and Raahil Doshi (Singapore, Singapore / Anglo - Chinese School (Independent), Singapore) who won 8-6 at first doubles.

After Duquesne tied the match with a win a first singles, the Tartans regained the team lead when Wernink won his second straight singles match, 6-3, 6-4, in the fourth position to have a 3-0 record for the weekend.

The score went back even after Doshi fell in three sets at third singles before sophomore Nadim Motaghedi (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney) put the Tartans one point away from the match victory with a 7-6(7-1), 4-6, 6-1 win at second singles.

Wang put the match away after a second-set tiebreaker win with a full score of 6-4, 7-6(7-5) at fifth singles.

The last point for the Tartans came from Poh at sixth singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Tartans will return to action on Saturday, February 12 when they face Duquesne again with a 4:00 p.m. start time.
