Tartans Drop Tough Match at Mary Washington

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 17th in the latest Division III ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings sponsored by Tennis-Point, traveled to the University of Mary Washington, ranked 22nd, for a Saturday afternoon match. The Eagles defended their home courts with an 8-1 victory to move the Tartans to 5-7 overall.

Doubles play was as tightly contested as it could get with the Eagles winning two points on tiebreakers. After the Eagles won 8-1 at first doubles, they picked up a 2-0 lead with an 8-7 (7-2) win at third doubles. Second doubles also went to the Eagles by an 8-7 (7-6) score.

As the match transitioned to singles play, the home team was able to secure the match-point after victories at the second and first positions, respectively.

Winning for the Tartans was junior Matthew Poh (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) at sixth singles, 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).

The Tartans will next face 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Mary Washington.
