Tartans Close Fall Season at ITA Southeast Regional Tournament

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team traveled to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to play in the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Mary Washington. The Tartans close play on Saturday with one player advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket.

Singles Play

  • Senior Matthew Poh was seeded ninth in the championship bracket and won three singles matches in the tournament to advance to the quarterfinals
  • Poh fell in the quarterfinals match to the top seed, junior Thomas Yu from Johns Hopkins University, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Junior Jaden D'Abreo won his first match of the championship bracket 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) but fell in the Round of 32.
  • Freshman Sebastien Lhuillier dropped his first match but won on the consolation side by an 8-6 score.
  • Sophomore Chaitanya Irkar, a first-year player for the Tartans, also dropped his first match but won on the consolation side with an 8-1 score.

Doubles Play

  • Junior Arjan Bedi and freshman Akshay Joshi won two matches on Friday to advance to the Round of 16 before falling to the junior pair of Rishi Charan Shankar and Peter Leese of the University of Mary Washington, 8-3.
  • Poh and junior Derek Wong had a first-round bye and won 8-7 (7-5) in the Round of 32 against Swarthmore's Andres Fente and Utham Koduri. The Tartan pair then dropped their Saturday match, 8-6, against Joe Demarco and Marco Azar of Johns Hopkins.
