Men's Track Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men's 2013 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Teams and Carnegie Mellon University was included on the list. A total of 80 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.1 or better.

Carnegie Mellon University had three athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team for men's cross country and track and field for the 2012-13 season; senior Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), junior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and sophomore George Degen (Madison, Wis./West). CoSIDA recognizes outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments by honoring deserving athletes with All-Academic recognition with the official sponsor of Capital One.

This year's championships are being hosted by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Junior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) of the Carnegie Mellon University men’s track & field team received an invite to compete at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Division III Track and Field Championships held May 23-25 in La Crosse, Wisconsin hosted by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Newby will be competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Carnegie Mellon University junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Outstanding Performer in the field events, as announced Wednesday, May 1. Erra-Hernandez won two UAA titles and claimed a second-place finish while helping the Tartans finish second at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend.

The two helped the Tartans to a first-place team finish at their Mini-Invite on Saturday, March 30.
