Field Events Highlight Tartans at the Al Hall Freedom Games

(EDINBORO, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team opened its 2013 season competing at the unscored Al Hall Freedom Games hosted at Edinboro University amongst colleges from Divisions I, II and III on Saturday, January 19.  

Junior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) turned in the lone Tartan top finish of the day after throwing the weight 15.46 meters.  Senior Patrick Robinson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) placed third in the weight throw, recording a distance of 14.71 meters. In the shot put, junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) took third with a toss of 14.97 meters.

In the pole vault, senior Daniel Cardenas Rivero (Upper Arlington, Ohio) cleared a height of 4.25 meters to take home second while sophomore Mike McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) also placed second in the high jump after clearing the bar that was placed at 2.00 meters.

In the running events, the Tartans turned in two second-place showings.  Sophomore Douglas O'Connell (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep) crossed the line in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.89 while fellow sophomore George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) recorded a time of 8:37.46 in the 3,000-meter race.

The Tartans will next compete at the Denison Lid-Lifter on January 26 in Granville, Ohio.
