Tartans Prepare for UAA Championships at Kent State

(KENT, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to Kent, Ohio for the Kent State Tune Up in preparation for the University Athletic Association Championships next week. The Tartans had a number of athletes finish with season and career best times.

Sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished second in his heat of the 400-meter dash in a career-best time of 49.25. Junior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) ran to a career-best time of 1:59.21 in the 800-meter run with freshman Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) finishing in a season-best time of 1:59.70.

Junior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) threw the weight throw 14.66 meters as senior Patrick Robinson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) tossed it 14.20 meters. Junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) finished 10th in the shot put with a mark of 15.82 meters.

Junior Christopher Holliday (Athens, Ohio/Athens) placed eighth in the pole vault, clearing 4.25 meters with senior Daniel Cardenas Rivero (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) placing tenth, clearing 4.10 meters.

Junior Daniel Ching (Trout Valley, Ill./The Culver Academies) finished third in his heat of the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.72 seconds with freshman Ben Neiman (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) finishing in 9.07 seconds. Neiman also competed in the long jump and lept to 5.19 meters. Freshman Max Reinertsen (Esko, Minn./Esko) jumped to a distance of 12.67 meters in the triple jump to lead the Tartans.

Sophomore Max Wilkin (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) sprinted to a time of 7.57 seconds in the 60-meter dash as senior Joel Lu (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) ran it in 7.64 seconds.

Sophomore Eamon Cullinane (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) placed 37th in the mile run, finishing in a career-best time of 4.31.01. Freshman Alex Maeda (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) finished the mile run in 4:33.64 while seniors Marc McGeary (Harrisburg, Pa./C.D. East) and Graham Shorr (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep CDS) finished the race in 4:38.16 and 4:38.55.

The UAA Championships will be hosted by Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24.
