Weaver Breaks School Record to Start Outdoor Season

(LEXINGTON, Va.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22, banking three first-place finishes and put another school record in the books.

Freshman Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) set the pace for the Tartans at the meet breaking the school record and taking first-place in the pole vault. He vaulted 4.60 meters to break the previous school record of 4.58 meters set by Chris Bridgman in 2008. Sophomore Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) crossed the finish line in the 800-meter run in 1:56.00 for a first-place finish.

Also grabbing a title for the Tartans was senior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) who tossed the shot put 15.50 meters. Erra-Hernandez also performed well in his season debut in the discus and hammer placing third in each with tosses of 43.24 and 51.59, respectively.

Seniors Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) and David Markowitz (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) also performed well in the throws. Cheek threw the discus 43.23 meters. In the hammer he had a respectable toss of 50.22 meters. Markowitz led the Tartans in the javelin, tossing 50.01 meters in the event debut. On the track, the Tartans saw an equal amount of success.

Senior Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) crossed the line second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:10.16. Junior Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) finished the 10,000-meter run in 32:34.76 to grab another second-place showing for the Tartans.

Freshman Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) stopped the clock in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:05.51, which gave him a third-place finish. Freshman Andrew Chang (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) ran his first 110-meter hurdles of his collegiate career and crossed the finish line in third-place with a time of 15.53.

A pair of freshman performed well in the long jump. Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) leapt 6.25 meters to grab a third-place finish, while Matthew Seifu (Silver Spring, Md./Sidwell Friends) kept things competitive with a final mark of 6.22 meters.

The Tartans will be competing next at home on Saturday, March 29.
