Eleven Titles Lead Tartans to Victory in the 2014 CMU Tri-Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team grabbed eleven individual titles to win the 2014 CMU Mid-Week meet against Penn State Behrend and Allegheny College.

Freshman Jacob Brooks (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) started the day off for the Tartans with a first-place finish in the javelin throw when he tossed it 52.63 meters.

Senior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) finished in first place in all three events he competed in.  In the shot put, Erra-Hernandez threw a season-best toss of 16.01 meters.  Later in the hammer throw, he released the implement 52.97 meters and with a throw of 41.08 meters in the discus, Erra-Hernandez took his third title of the meet.

In the men's triple jump, sophomore Brandon Hoane (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) hopped, skipped, and jumped his way to a mark of 12.49 meters to take first place.

Senior Christopher Holliday (Athens, Ohio/Athens) grabbed the title in the pole vault with a mark of 4.25 meters.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) crossed the finish line to earn a first-place finish with a time of 9:34.23.

Senior Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) grabbed another title for the Tartans in the 1,500-meter run when he finished the race with a time of 4:04.69.

Another first-place finish came from freshman Andrew Chang (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), as he stopped the clock at 15.73.

Setting a new career-best and grabbing another title for the Tartans, junior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) crossed the finish line of the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.61. 

Freshman Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) grabbed the last title of the day for the Tartans in the 800-meter run when he stopped the clock at 1:56.21.

Senior Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) set a new career-best in the javelin throw with a toss of 51.06 meters to take third place and 14.98 meters in the shot put for second place.  Another third-place finish and career-best came from freshman Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) in the long jump with a mark of 6.29 meters.  In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Mike Standish (Washington, Pa./Trinity) set a new career-best with a time of 56.51.

The men's track and field team will be competing next weekend April 26 and 27 at the 2014 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.
