Men's Track Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Award

(NEW ORLEANS, La.) - The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men's 2014 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Teams and Carnegie Mellon University was included on the list. A total of 93 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.1 or better.

The men's track and field team achieved a team GPA of 3.30 for the 2013-2014 school year to earn a place on the All-Academic team.

In addition to the team earning the award, senior Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), juniors George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) and Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and freshman Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) were named to the team individually.

All four athletes qualified for the award by achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better with either competing at the NCAA Championships or finishing the season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event.

Vandenberg competed at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run, earning All-America honors during the indoor season. He achieved a GPA of 3.31 in mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering.

Murphy, Norley and Vandenberg were part of the distance medley relay team that finished the indoor season ranked 30th with Murphy achieving a 3.53 GPA in computer science and human computer interaction and Norley a 3.56 GPA in materials science and engineering. Degen finished ranked 30th in the 3,000-meter run at the completion of the indoor season and achieved a GPA of 3.84 in chemical engineering.
