Tartans Finish Fifth at UAA Indoor Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team placed fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, March 1 at the University of Chicago. The Tartans won four events during the meet.

On Saturday, senior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) won the 5,000-meter run in a season-best 14:55.05 while sophomore Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) was fifth in the event in a career-best time of 15:16.34. The distance medley relay team was also crowned as UAA Champions. The team of junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), sophomore Nathan Willis (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends' Central School), senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and sophomore Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) crossed in 10:06.75.

On Sunday, Vandenberg ran to his third-straight UAA Championship in the 800-meter run, crossing in 1:53.59, a full second ahead of the second-place finisher.

Joining Degen and Vandenberg as individual champions was Norley in the mile run. Norley crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 4:16.58.

Degen narrowly missed becoming a two-time UAA Champion as he finished second in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 8:37.71. Freshman Ryan Auld (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) ran to a fifth-place finish in the distance event in a career-best time of 8:43.63.
