Men’s Track and Field Places Second at Annual Quad Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual Carnegie Mellon Quad on Saturday, April 4.  The Tartans turned in eight first-place finishes as the team placed second with 200 points.  Penn State Behrend won the quad with 212 points.

Sophomore Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) claimed the first title for the Tartans on the afternoon when he crossed the finish line with a time of 9:54.58 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Senior Elliot Watson (Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley School) finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:58.65.  

Sophomore Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) took first in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:04.36.  Junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) also ran a season-best time in the 1,500 crossing in 4:09.22 to place third.

In the 800-meter race, senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) placed first with a time of 1:56.86 while freshman Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) placed third after crossing in 1:59.97. Sophomore Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) took second in the 110-meter hurdles after crossing in 16.94.

In the 3,000-meter run sophomore Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) took the title with a school-record time of time of 8:42.30. Second-place was claimed by senior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West), as he crossed in 8:48.24.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Vandenberg, Norley, Julien and junior Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley), finished with a time of 3:27.24 to win the relay.

In field events, freshman Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) scored first-place points for the Tartans with a toss of 44.96 meters in the hammer.  Schofel placed second overall in the event, as Carnegie Mellon alum, Zachary Erra- Hernandez, broke the stadium record with a throw of 58.09 meters to place first as an unattached competitor.  Junior Paul Hamerski (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) turned in a career-best throw of 39.40 meters to record second-place points for the Tartans in the hammer.  Schofel later placed first in the discus with a toss of 42.31 meters.

Carnegie Mellon claimed first and second in the triple jump as freshman Shane Conton (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) and junior Brandon Hoane (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) recorded jumps of 12.50 meters and 12.30 meters, respectively.  In the high jump, sophomore Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) placed second after clearing the bar at 1.75 meters.

Freshman David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) placed third in the shot put after recording a distance of 12.73 meters.  

The Tartans will travel to the Westminster College Invitational on Saturday, April 11 while distance runners will head to the Bucknell Distance Carnival.
