Day 1 of UAA Championships Complete with School Record Set

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team began action at the 2015 University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, April 25 at Emory University. After seven scored events, the Tartans are sixth with 25 points.

The first day of the meet ended with a school record for the Tartans, as the 4x800-meter relay team of junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), freshman Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), sophomore Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) won the event in a time of 7:39.98. The win marks the third straight year the Tartans took first in the event.

Sophomore Steven Kool (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson for Sci. & Tech.) ran the 10,000-meter run for the Tartans and claimed eighth place in a career-best time of 32:46.70. The second distance race to be scored for the meet was the 3,000-meter steeplechase which saw sophomore Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) place sixth in 9:43.44.

Freshman David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) earned All-UAA third-team honors when he heaved the shot put 13.90 meters to take third place while freshman Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 42.01 meters.

Also in the field events, sophomore Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) took sixth place in the long jump, leaping 6.40 meters.

Action will continue on Sunday with four more field events and the finals of eight individual races and two relays.
