Two Men's Track Athletes Compete at Swarthmore College's Final Qualifier

(SWARTHMORE, Pa.) – Seniors Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed on Monday, May 11 at Swarthmore College's Final Qualifier.  Both Vandenberg and Degen set personal bests in their respective event.

Vandenberg competed in the 400-meter race and placed third overall and was the top Division III runner to finish.  The senior crossed in 47.81 which is currently the 13th top time nationally in Division III.  Degen placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run crossing in 14:45.30. His time was also second-best among Division III runners.

The top 20 times qualify for the NCAA Championships in each event.  The last day to compete prior to NCAA invites is Friday, May 15.  Vandenberg currently ranks third nationally in the 800-metr race as well, while Degen ranks sixth in the 10,000-meter with four days left of competition.
