Men’s Track & Field Compete at SPIRE North Coast Indoor Open and Win Denison Lid Lifter

(GRANVILLE, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the SPIRE North Coast Indoor Track & Field Open at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, while half the team also competed at the Denison Lid Lifter in Granville, Ohio on Saturday, January 23.  The North Coast Open was unscored, as the Tartans won the Lid Lifter with 191 points.

At the SPIRE, Carnegie Mellon freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) claimed his second straight victory in the long jump after leaping 6.47 meters.  Junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) placed second with a mark of 6.27 meters.

The mile run was won by Tartan junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) who crossed with a career-best time of 4:20.52.  Placing second was junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) with a time of 4:21.94.

Also for the second consecutive week, the 3,000-meter run was controlled by the Tartans.  After the top two spots were claimed by unattached runners, Carnegie Mellon claimed the next six spots with junior Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) leading the way with a career-best time of 8:35.79 to place third.  Behind the junior was graduate student Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and senior Brian Bollens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), who both also finished with career-best times of 8:45.87 and 8:47.22, respectively.

Freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) was second in the 400-meter das with a time of 51.49 while classmate Christopher Bayley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) crossed in 51.65 to place third. The 800-meter run saw sophomore Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) run a career-best time of 1:56.65 to place fourth.

Junior Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) ran to a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95.

At the Denison Lid Lifter, Carnegie Mellon turned in three top finishes with one coming in the 4x400-meter relay.  The team of freshman Ian Allen (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham), sophomore Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Thomas Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and junior Tanguy Dauphin (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Cardinal Spellman) crossed in 3:39.46.

The Tartans swept the top three spots in the pole vault and in the 3,000-meter run. Mansfield won the pole vault after clearing 3.81 meters while junior Kyle Weaver (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay School) and Allen both cleared the bar at 3.51 meters, but Weaver was awarded second on the judges decision.  Mansfield also took second in the long jump with a leap of 6.06 meters and third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37.

Freshman Jacob Halasowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) won the 3,000 with a time of 9:15.94.  Placing second was junior William Casazza (Barrington, R.I.) in 9:20.76 followed by freshman Aaditya Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) in 9:24.27.  

Freshman Liam Walsh (Needham, Mass.) took second in the mile run with a time of 4:35.66. Freshman Evan Compton (Chantilly, Va.) and sophomore Andrew Bryan (Saratoga, Calif.) followed Walsh with times of 4:36.20 and 4:41.89 to place third and fourth.

The Tartans recorded two other third-place showings on the track with sophomore Devin Cortese (Orlando, Fla./Freedom) crossing the 60-meter dash in 7.45 and Dauphin finishing with a time of 24.59 in the 200-meter dash.

In the high jump Smith placed second after clearing 1.72 meters and Dauphin picked up another third-place with a height of 1.67 meters.

Freshman Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) took third in the shot put with a mark of 11.97 meters and sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed fourth with a distance of 11.94 meters.  Schofel also took third in the weight throw with a toss of 14.91 meters.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action on Saturday, January 30 when the head to Cleveland, Ohio to compete against Case Western Reserve University in the Battle for the Obelisk.
