Ten Victories Pace Tartans at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled to University Athletic Association competitor Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) for the 9th Annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 30. CWRU retained the obelisk winning by a combined score of 146-126, with the Tartan men winning the gender battle, 78-58.

The Tartans finished 1-2 in the 800-meter run when sophomore Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) crossed first in 1:58.45 with senior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) just behind him in 1:58.52. Next, junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) won the mile run in a career-best 4:20.46.

The Tartans swept the 3,000-meter run with junior Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) pacing the group in 8:47.34. Graduate student Joshua Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was second in 8:51.18 with sophomore Ryan Auld (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) placing third in 8:51.95. Antonson later placed second in the 5,000-meter run in a career-best 15:17.01 while senior Brian Bollens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was third in 15:23.03.

The 4x400-meter relay team of junior Jonathan Perry (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), freshman Christopher Bayley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley), freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and Norley crossed first in 3:25.37 while the distance medley relay team of freshman Mark Moody (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill), Mills, Norley and freshman Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) won in 10:42.05.

Junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) placed second in the 400-meter dash in 51.18 while junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) was second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.80 with junior Matthew Sheh (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) crossing third in a career-best 8.85.

The Tartans swept the high jump with sophomore Cameron Smith (Darien, Conn./Darien) taking first, clearing 1.80 meters. Freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Boyer tied for second as they both cleared 1.75 meters.

Sophomore Thomas Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) won the pole vault by clearing 4.10 meters. More first-place finishes came in the long jump when Walters leapt a career-best 6.95 meters and sophomore Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) won the triple jump with a jump of 12.95 meters. Boyer was third in both jumping events with marks of 6.27 meters and 12.36 meters.

The shot put saw sophomore David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) win with a mark of 13.80 meters as freshman Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) was third with a mark of 13.43 meters. Sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 14.67 meters.

The Tartans will next compete at the Denison University Bob Shannon Invite on Saturday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m.
