Four UAA Titles and a School Record Lead Tartans at UAA Indoor Championships
(NEW YORK, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, February 28. The two-day championships were hosted by NYU at the Armory in New York City. The Tartans won four events during the meet while freshman Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) broke his own school record in the long jump.
Walters jumped to a first-place finish in the long jump with a school record mark of 7.17 meters. The freshman broke his own school record of 6.95 meters that he set at Case Western Reserve at the end of January.
Two other titles were claimed in the field events. Sophomore David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) threw a season-best 14.84 meters in the shot put and classmate Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) threw the weight throw 15.24 meters to win the respective events. Freshman Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) took fourth in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 14.77 meters and fifth in the shot put with another season-best toss of 13.64 meters. Schofel recorded a career-best throw of 13.44 meters in the shot put to place sixth.
The Tartans fourth title came in the mile run when junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) crossed in a personal-best time of 4:11.75. Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) earned points for the Tartans in the mile with a fifth-place finish after posting a personal-best time of 4:18.47.
Senior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.62 while fellow senior Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a career-best time of 14:54.73.
Carnegie Mellon's distance medley relay team of Watro, Norley, junior Brady Wilson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep (Wake Forest)) and freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) claimed second with a time of 10:12.87.
