Men’s Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at W&L Carnival

(LEXINGTON, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia for the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19. The Tartans turned in three first-place showings in the first meet of the spring.

Junior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) turned in two of the Tartans three first-place finishes, as he won the 800-meter run and the 1,500-meter run with times of 1:54.41 and 4:00.37. Junior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:37.04 for the Tartans third title for the meet.

Competing in the 800 along with Norley was freshman Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and senior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) who crossed in fourth and fifth with times of 1:56.56 and 1:56.57, respectively.

In the 10,000-meter run, junior Steven Kool (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson for Sci. & Tech.) placed second with a career-best time of 32:23.85 while junior Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:07.62.

Senior Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) placed second in the 100-mester dash with a time of 11.53. Junior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) turned in a fifth and sixth place showing when he jumped 6.74 meters in the long jump and crossed the finish line with a time of 16.76 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) placed second in the discus with a toss of 41.21 meters and third in the hammer with a mark of 44.83 meters. Freshman Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) was fifth in the hammer with a toss of 40.16 meters.

The Tartans will host the Carnegie Mellon Invite on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26.
