(GENVA, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team opened its indoor season at the SPIRE Carnegie Mellon University Invitational on Saturday, January 20. The 13-team event was held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Tartans won the invitational scoring 119.50 points as the Cardinal and Gray posted three top finishes while senior Tommy Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) broke the school record in the pole vault.

Mansfield closed the invitational clearing 4.58 meters in the pole vault to win the event. His height was 0.2 meters better than his previous school record mark of 4.56 meters which he cleared last season. The Tartans other two top finishes came in the 60-meter dash and mile run. Freshman Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Phillips Exeter Academy) crossed the finish line in 7.08 in the 60-meter while sophomore Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan/American School in Japan) crossed in 4:18.50 in the mile.

In the 800-meter run, the Cardinal and Gray claimed third and fourth when Arthur Dzieniszewski (Old Bridge, N.J.) crossed in 1:55.71 followed by junior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) crossing in 1:56.46.

The Tartans two relays fared well on the afternoon placing second in the distance medley and third in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Dzieniszewski, Bennett, Yukevich and freshman Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y./Notre Dame) crossed in 10:45.00 in the distance medley relay while the team of graduate student Jonathan Perry (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), freshman Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), senior Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) and Mills posted a time of 3:28.46 in the 4x400 relay.

Sophomore Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) recorded a career-best distance of 13.22 in the triple jump to place second and senior Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif./Lynbrook) finished third with a jump of 13.05 meters.

Senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J.) placed second in the weight throw after tossing the element 15.39 meters and freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) placed third in the shot put with a toss of 14.17 meters.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action on Saturday, January 27 when the head to Cleveland, Ohio to compete against Case Western Reserve University in the Battle for the Obelisk.
