Schofel and Walters Claim UAA Titles at First Day of UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team currently sits third in the field following the first day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Saturday. The Tartans have 31 points and trail Case Western Reserve University by one-point and Washington University in St. Louis by 11 points. The 2018 championships are being held on the campus of Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

Senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) was crowned the UAA Champion in the weight throw with a toss of 16.75 meters, a season-best. It marked the third straight year the senior has won the event at the championships.

Sophomore Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio / St. Ignatius) jumped his way to a UAA title with a leap of 6.80 meters in the long jump.

Sophomore Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard), junior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton), freshman Arthur Dzieniszewski (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge), and sophomore Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) raced to a third-place finish in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:13.55.

Other Tartans that contributed to Saturday's point total included junior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) with his fourth-place finish in the high jump clearing 1.91 meters and junior Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) finished the 5,000-meter run in sixth with a time of 15:05.83.

In the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, freshman Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) broke the school record with a blazing time of 6.99 seconds. His time was tops in the preliminaries.

The UAA Indoor Track and Field competition will resume Sunday, February 25 at 10:00 a.m.
