Men’s Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at W&L Carnival

(LEXINGTON, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team traveled south to Lexington, Virginia for the Washington and Lee Track and Field Carnival hosted by Washington and Lee University at Foster Stadium on Friday and Saturday. The Tartans turned in five first-place showings and swept the top three spots in two events in the first meet of the spring.

Senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton), freshman Arthur Dzieniszewski (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) and sophomore Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) claimed the top three spots in the 800-meter run. Mills crossed with a time of 1:54.60, Dzieniszewski in 1:56.39 and Walsh in a career-best time of 1:56.45.

In the 5,000-meter run, junior Andrew Harter (Saratoga, Calif.) led the sweep crossing in a career-best time of 15:07.82. The Tartans then grabbed the next three spots with junior Jared Moore (Beaver Dams, N.Y. / Corning-Painted Post) finishing second in 15:08.82, followed by freshman Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame) in 15:11.60 and junior Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) in 15:15.10.

Sophomores Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical) and Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y.) placed first and second in the steeplechase with times of 9:39.71 and 9:43.59, respectively. Hartshorne's time was a career-best.

Dzieniszewski won the 1,500-meter run after crossing in 4:05.87 while Walsh took second with a career-best time of 4:06.53.

Junior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) recorded a career-best mark in the high jump when he cleared the bar at 1.94 meters to win the event. Sophomore Rai Walters (Westlake, Ohio / St. Ignatius) took third in the long jump with a mark of 6.46 meters.

Senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) claimed a first-place finish in the hammer throw and a fourth-place showing in the discus. He tossed the hammer 53.98 meters and the discus 40.54 meters. Freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) placed second with a toss of 14.60 meters in the shot put and then finished third in the discus after a toss of 40.62 meters.

Next up for the Tartans is their home invitational on Saturday, March 24. Hammer throw will take place on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
