Dauphin Sets School Record, Cory Wins 5,000m Run while Tartans Place Third at Westminster Invitational

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished third at the Westminster College Invitational on Saturday, April 14. The Tartans finished first amongst Division III teams while Youngstown State University and Slippery Rock University finished above the 101 points the Tartans earned for the day.

Sophomore Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) broke a school record last set in 1974 when he placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.04 meters. He jump surpassed the previous mark set by Wade Gregson at 13.97 meters. Senior Eloy Fernandez (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) placed fourth in the same event after a jump of 13.68 meters.

The big event for the Tartans was the 5,000-meter run where six Tartans placed in the top eight. Junior Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) won the event in 15:15.75 with junior Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) taking second in 15:17.18. Placing third was sophomore Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) in 15:24.19 with freshman Naveen Pai (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) finishing fourth in 15:28.54.

Freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) earned a third-place finish in the discus throw with a mark of 44.79 meters to lead the Tartans. Senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) was sixth in the event with a mark of 42.86 meters. Miller turned in a second top-five finish for the day in the shot put when he tossed the element 14.20 meters to place fifth.

Schofel earned a victory in the hammer throw when he tossed it 55.06 meters.

Junior Mark Moody (Ellicott City, Md. / River Hill) placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58.18 while freshman Michael Cabral (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Pine Crest School) was fourth in 1:59.08. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) finished second in 9:36.43 while classmate Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) was third in 9:45.58.
