Miller and Schofel Win UAA Titles Day One

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team began the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at home on Saturday. The Tartans earned 61 points after seven scored events and are currently in second behind Washington University who has 83 points.

Freshman Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and senior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) claimed UAA titles on the first day on competition. Miller won the shot put with a toss of 15.50 meters while Schofel recorded his third straight title in the hammer with a mark of 54.83 meters. The senior also placed third in the shot put with a distance of 14.20 meters.

Juniors Kevin Cory (Frederick, Md. / Urbana) and Aadi Mhatre (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run on Saturday evening. Cory crossed in 31:44.70 while Mhatre finished in 31:47.23.

Also in field events, sophomore Fred Dauphin (Brockton, Mass. / Cardinal Spellman) scored points with a fourth-place showing in the long jump and freshman Jack Murphy (Ithaca, N.Y. / Trumansburg) placed seventh in the pole vault. Dauphin jumped 6.53 meters and Murphy cleared the bar at 3.93 meters.

The 4x800 meter relay team of freshman Arthur Dzieniszewski (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge), junior Mark Moody (Ellicott City, Md. / River Hill), sophomore Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) and junior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) placed third after crossing in 7:48.94.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) finished sixth in 9:41.83 while classmate Harry Branch-Shaw (New York, N.Y. / Brooklyn Technical) was seventh in 9:45.45.

The championship meet will continue on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with field events and running starting at 11:30 a.m.
